In Lineage 2 not only is each class fairly unique, but each race with those classes available have their own unique version of the class so class selection can be quite daunting for some when there are so many options available.
Keep in mind that in Lineage 2, the game is all about the journey because reaching level cap is not something everyone can or will do, but it is definitely a long term goal. So If there is a particular race or class that interests you, feel free to ignore my words and just play whatever you want. Having said that I will go through each of the classes and give my thoughts. These are based on my play time long ago, aimed at new players looking to either solo or get into small groups . I will also replay this game and make changes based on my findings.
Summoners
Summoners are available to Humans (Warlock), Elf (Elemental Summoner) and Dark Elf (Phantom Summoner). Their selling point is their summons and they are able to provide supplementary damage and support themselves. The summons are servitors which follow around and attack things and cubics which are these floating cubes that follow you around and cast spells. At lower levels summoners may even be preferred for healing since they also provide damage and dedicated healers are overkill at lower levels.
Elemental Summoner,very popular. They have access to a servitor that restores mana allowing you to cast near infinitely. Their summons are unicorns.
Warlock, similar to the Elemental Summoner, the main difference I recall is that their cubics are more oriented towards crowd control than damage.
Phantom Summoner, least popular because it lacks the ability to restore it’s mana. Though it does have access to poison and the cubics provide debuffs. Due to this you’re somewhat more inclined to melee then sit back and cast behind your servitor, not a problem if that’s what you want.
For solo’ers I highly recommend summoner. The Elemental Summoner or Warlock particularly.
Hybrid/Dancers
Elf and Dark Elves get access to Sword Singer and Blade Dancer respectively. These are melee/tank/support hybrids. They do good damage and provide excellent buffs.
Sword Singer, provides more defensive support.
Blade Dancer, provides more offensive support.
Both of these are great classes and can solo quite well. Your choice is between being more offensively or defensively oriented. Though Blade Dancer is easier to solo due to it’s offensive offerings and thus more popular. However Sword Singers are more in demand due to less of them existing and being more applicable at higher levels instead of lower levels. Both classes are wanted by all parties not only for their buffs but to fulfill a mob training role (gathering monsters).
Warriors
Available to Humans (Warlord or Gladiator), Orcs (Destroyer or Tyrant) and Dwarves (Bounty Hunter or Warsmith). Warriors are the typical melee damage dealers in this game. I like to split them into 2 categories. The ones that can use pole-arms and the ones that cannot.
Polers: Warlord, Destroyer, Bounty Hunter and Warsmith
Non-Polers: Gladiator and Tyrant
The polearm classes have great AoE (area of effect damage) to fight groups of monsters and will be in demand for leveling parties. Non-polers are focused on single-target, they may have some AoE but not to the extent of the polers.
Warlord, the Ultimate physical AoE class. AoE Stun, Debuffs, Provoke, Emergency Healing, it has everything you need to mow-down groups of enemies.
Destroyer, has self buffs and extra single target damage options.
Lineage 2 Classic Forums
Bounty Hunter, Basic AoE abilities, has extra single target abilities over Warsmith. Extra skills based around getting better drops and carrying capacity.
Warsmith, Basic AoE abilities, has self buffs. Extra skills based around crafting and can craft golems to attack with.
Gladiator, straight forward single target focused damage dealing class, has various attack skills and a little utility through stuns and little aoe. Uses dual blades.
Tyrant, single target much like the gladiator but has a plethora of unique buffs and debuffs to play with. Can AoE ok as well. Uses fist weapons.
Among the warriors, though Warlord is the ultimate AoE class a lot of parties will accept any pole-user as it is better than none. But if you want to play Gladiator or Tyrant for style points, go ahead. Tyrant is one of the classes I played the most just because I like to punch things. Though these classes can manage solo fine, it is a much cheaper and efficient to go with a party or have a support character follow.
Archers
Available to Humans (Hawk Eye), Elf (Silver Ranger) and Dark Elf (Phantom Ranger). Archers are fairly typical, great ranged capability, serviceable crowd control, lower survivability. Great option if mass PvP is what you want to do. Carrying capacity can be a bit of an issue due to the weight of all the arrows you have to carry.
Hawkeye, very popular and seen by many as the best option. High damage, access to a stun and my favourite aspect, the quiver of holding which increases carrying capacity up from 30% to 50% if they increase the level cap further than 70 but for the moment it’s 40% available at level 66.
Phantom Ranger, high damage and access to nice debuffs.
Silver Ranger, has lower damage, but greater mobility which is important for PvP, even more so for solo pvp.
Arrows limit both your budget and your carrying capacity but if you can manage it, archers are fine at leveling solo due to their high damage output, range and ability to kite. Due to their lower defensive attributes, latency can be a problem for some.
Daggers
The Dagger classes are available to Human (Treasure Hunter), Elf (Plains Walker) and Dark Elf (Abyss Walker). Dagger classes can unlock doors and treasure chests. They can use silent move to get the drop on monsters, turn invisible and fake death to drop out of combat.
Abyss Walker, high damage but fragile. Has access to poison, bleed and debuffs.
Plains Walker, lower damage, faster movement speed, higher evasion stats, access to some minor healing and recovery.
Treasure Hunter, good damage and survivability. Extra trick (makes target cancel target) and a nice short burst speed skill.
The most popular choice here is Treasure Hunter followed by Abyss Walker. Though Abyss Walker can output more damage it’s very fragile. Plains Walker has supplementary support skills which is not attractive to those focused solely on damage.
Dagger classes as a whole are not popular at all, especially in classic as they lack any aoe and their attack skills can be iffy. Leveling will be painful without a supporter.
Mages
Available to Humans (Sorcerer and Necromancer), Elf (Spell Singer) and Dark Elf (Spell Howler). High damage, though mana and money intensive.
Spell Singer – High DPS, mana intensive, fast casting. Faster casting whilst affording higher dps will kill your mana supply.
Spell Howler– High Burst damage due to higher magic attack rating. Has the lowest HP but does have the Vampiric Claw skill to heal with. Less AoE spells available.
Sorcerer – Middle ground between Spell Singer and Spell Howler.
Necromancer – Damage is generally lower but has access to great aoe slow and debuffs. Their AoE damage skill Corpse Burst is also limitless. Higher survivability from higher HP pool and Vampiric Claw spell. Can summon undead too, but lacks the skills of a proper summoner to make them truly effective.
Mages can be very powerful but are also very costly to level. They need to be in a party or leveling will be very slow. I don’t recommend this for a new player unless they are willing to multi-client with a recharger character to restore mana (Shillien Elder or Elven Elder).
Tanks
Tanks are available to Human (Paladin and Dark Avenger), Elf (Temple Knight) and Dark Elf (Shillien Knight). They specialize in survivability and controlling the monsters via crowd control skills and skills which force the monsters to attack them.
Dark Avenger, Can summon a panther servitor for added damage. Access to debuffs and more crowd control.
Shillien Knight, Great debuffs access to cubics. Great tanking ability.
Temple Knight, great tanking ability has a debuff.
Paladin, Holy Warrior themed class, has healing and anti-undead skills.
Tanks can level solo fine, albeit slower due to lower damage. For partying they are absolutely not needed as Sword Singer and Blade Dancers can gear up to be suitably tanking whilst providing their team with great buffs. However the Aggression aura skill allows Tanks to do round up monsters much easier. Most parties are willing to take you along though. At some higher level areas the monsters hit so hard you can’t even tank them so they are CC’d or Kited instead.
The most popular Tanks are Dark Avenger and Shillien Knight due to their debuffs. Dark Avenger has the added bonus of being able to solo better due to the Panther. Shillien Knight and Temple Knight are great for those who want to play the dedicated tank role anyways due to their guard stance skill which they can toggle for a huge defense boost. Paladin is the least played, but if you want to be a hybrid healer or yell “deus vult” while you play don’t let me stop you.
Healers
Healers are available to Humans (Bishop ), Elf (Elven Elder), Dark Elf (Shillien Elder). They can heal well and provide additional support depending on class.
Bishop, Best Healer, has mass resurrection for clan battles.
Elven Elder, Defensive oriented buffs and can recharge party mana.
Shillien Elder, Offensive oriented buffs and can recharge party mana.
Healers are hard to level and I do not recommend playing one solo. Shillien Elder and Elven Elder are well loved for their mana recharging. Bishop is more in demand late game (some say essential), lower levels your heals are simply over kill and a summoner could take that role.
Support
Support Classes are available to Humans (Prophet) and Orcs (Warcryer and Overlord).
Prophet, All-round class. The large amount of buffs and varied skills allow you to kit out your Prophet to do other roles like tank, melee, cast or even heal with your Cleric skills.
Warcryer, The most buffs on a single class. HP Regen skills (Heal over time), some damage and crowd control.
Overlord, – Clan buffer, literally no reason to play as one unless you’re going to be in a clan.
Support classes are very difficult to level but are usually accepted into parties because buffs are great in this game. Overlord will be restricted to clan mates only. I do not recommend playing one of these solo.
Multi-clienting or Multi-boxing
Due to Lineage 2 being free-to-play multi-clienting is a popular option. There are many different setups so instead of writing every single combination I will write the classes I commonly see and their reasons.
Healer, Usually Shillien Elder or Elven Elder for heals, buffs and mana recharge. Bishop for pure heals. Used in duo-boxing or triple
Support, Blade Dancers, Sword Singer, Prophet or Warcryer. Duos or triple.
Spoiler, Bounty Hunter, used purely for the spoil skill to increase drops. Found in triples. Example, main character/healer/bountyhunter
Warlord, Warlord is a great AoE machine. Used to do the actual leveling whilst the main class(es) leach. Great option if your main character is support or healer. Triples unless it is the main class or a support is the main class.
Multiboxing is quite common. The official stance on multiboxing is a maximum of 3 clients open per person/computer. I usually see 2, sometimes 3, very rarely 4 or more as it is against the rules and those are usually bot trains (kill and/or report these guys). I honestly much prefer to play solo or duo if possible and even better being in a real party as a person controlling each individual character is much better than dividing your attention.
Summary
Honestly just pick whatever you want and enjoy the ride. The length of play in this game is so long that it’s not worth playing something you don’t like just because it’s easier, it is still a large time-sink regardless.
I’ve tried to list the classes somewhat in order of ease to level solo but I will relist them in order: Summoners, Dancers, Warrior, Mage, Archer, Dagger, Tank, Healer, Support.
In terms of party demand: Healer, Dancer, Support, Mage, Warrior (Poling) Archer, Warrior, Tank, Summoner, Dagger.
For PvP I can’t comment much on this as It was so long ago and I have little experience in the matter also players skills have matured so it will unlikely be the same.
Lineage 2 Classic Summoner Macro
If you’re willing to multi-client and/or have wealth in game then you can just do whatever you want.
